Year 1

The children study a range of books from Paddington Bear and The Day the Crayons Quit, to Stick Man and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. From exploring these texts, the children focus on different aspects of the curriculum. For example, whilst studying The Day the Crayons Quit, they investigate a Recount/Diary and focus on the suffix -er and exclamation marks.

During Year 1 we follow the Phonics programme of Read Write inc, which encourages the children to learn their graphemes in an entertaining and through scheme.

Year 2

The children study a range of books from fiction books likeTraditional Tales like Hansel and Gretel to Non-fiction books on topics like pets and dinosaurs. From studying these books, the children then focus on different aspects of the curriculum. For example, whilst studying Diary of a Wombat the children produce their own diaries focusing on apostrophes for possession and compound words.

During Year 2 we follow the Phonics programme of Read Write inc, which encourages the children to learn their alternate graphemes in an entertaining and through scheme.

Year 3 and 4

In lower key stage 2, the children study a range of texts and topics from looking at Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl to exploring Greek and Roman Myths. During the topic on Fantastic Mr Fox the children explore adjectives and speech marks whilst writing their own stories. They read The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo and the children produce role-plays, write dialogue, use adverbials, and finally produce a new chapter for the book. They also do a topic about animals in captivity, reading texts including Zoo by Anthony Browne and Rainbow Bear by Michael Morpurgo, where they study adverbials and expanded noun phrases, resulting in writing a persuasive letter.

Year 5 and 6

The curriculum in Year 5 and 6 is rich and varied. For example, in Poetry we explore Michael Rosen’s family history in his book On the Move, where the children write their own poems based on Rosen’s style. In Non-Fiction we explore the history of Black women in NASA, using the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly as a basis for the children to then create their own news articles. In fiction one of the textstudied is The Explorer by Katherine Rundell, where the children write their own adventure stories.
